“I'll just learn what I need to know about breastfeeding in the hospital when my baby is born.”

After all, they have to help me, right? Well, we know how busy it can be when you're pregnant. We understand how hard it can be to attend a breastfeeding class and we get it. There's a lot of information online that you can pick up on. There's a lot of probably people in your life who can tell you things about breastfeeding.

And it's true that hospitals do have a responsibility to make sure that you know how to feed your baby before you take them home from the hospital if your baby is born in a hospital.

Here's the problem though. There are so many other things that you have to learn and that the hospital has to teach you before you leave the hospital.

It's really not the best time to be learning new things because your brain is going to be in a mode that is more about nurturing and getting to know your baby than it is about learning a bunch of facts about how breastfeeding works.

And so if you run into any obstacles or problems, if your baby is not latching right away or having any sorts of problems with their feeding, it might become very confusing as you start to have to learn a whole bunch of new tasks and keep track of a lot of different things on top of all the other physical things that are happening for your body and your baby.

So waiting until your baby is born and hoping that you'll learn everything you need to know in the hospital, it's not a great plan.

It really is much more helpful to learn as much as you can beforehand, to get as much as you can while you're there in the hospital, and then to reach out for additional help after you've gone home.

It's the kind of thing that you really do need a lot of information about in order to feel confident and be able to overcome any challenges or obstacles that might come up.

And it's the kind of thing that's very individual.

So if you have any individual concerns or worries or anxieties about how breastfeeding might be for you, it really is smart to get in touch with Baby Cafe in advance so that we can talk through those things with you and help you make a plan for avoiding problems and getting through any challenges that might come up.

Waiting to get the help that you need when your baby is born in the hospital. It's just not a great plan. And it's not fair to rely only on the people who are trying to take care of you in the hospital to teach you all about breastfeeding when they also have to teach you a zillion other things.

Do reach out, do your reading ahead of time. Think about what is how you're feeling.
