Breastfeeding Tools & Devices: Good or Bad?
What Expecting Parents & Their Families Should Know
Are breastfeeding tools & devices good or bad?
It isn't about the tools & devices - it's about how they are being used!
Like any tool, there's 3 things that can result from use: help, harm, or nothing at all.
So how can you figure out if a tool is helping you or will help you?
Sometimes tools & devices can cause harm that you can't even see or feel, so it's best to work with a trained lactation care provider before using one.
(We know that it seems like things you buy to help you with breastfeeding and lactation SHOULD be self-explanatory, but they’re not. Even if you can figure out HOW to use something, you may not be aware of best practices for how often or how long to use it. It’s best to get some help from a trained lactation professional!)
A good rule of thumb: if you're using anything made of plastic or silicone on your lactation journey, bring a lactation care provider along for the ride - you'll get the best use of your "stuff!"
Not to mention, knowing which tools and devices you actually need can SAVE YOU MONEY! There’s no point buying things you won’t need or that won’t apply to your situation.
Though this may sound obvious, it’s important to remember that most people around the world breastfeed and feed their own milk for years without using any devices or tools, and generations of folks have done the same.
All those online baby lists of things you just “have to have!” are not written just for you by someone who actually knows your situation.
If you’re pregnant and thinking about buying some things to support your lactation journey, start by talking to an IBCLC© for a prenatal lactation consult so you can get some personalized guidance.
Likewise, if you’re already using some tools and devices, but they don’t seem to be helping as much as you hoped, please talk to an IBCLC so you can maximize their effectiveness for your situation!
You can get help when you’re pregnant AND after your baby is born from our IBCLC staff and trained lactation support providers at Baby Café Bakersfield. If you’re outside the Kern County area, we’re happy to help connect you to qualified help in your community!
